Limestone Side Table

One of a kind limestone table featuring an ash top finished with India ink and a low VOC hard wax made primarily from rapidly renewable, natural vegetable oils.

The limestone is salvaged block by block by the maker, from a quarry in his hometown in southern Indiana. It is the same region that produced the stones for the Empire State Building. Mike manually cuts and shapes the stone, using hand tools - a mallet and chisel. The form is found gesturally, without formal planning. He loves limestone for the way it is cool-colored, severe, and visually heavy while also conveying warmth - it has an inviting texture that reminds one of its origins in nature.

About the Maker - Mike Newins

Mike Newins is a designer and maker. In the studio, he works with a lot of self-imposed restraints: starting with a very specific goal and adding restrictions until he has something beautiful, perfect.

Newins builds work that has an interactive relationship with the space and humans around it. The work is influenced by modern art, traditional craft, and imaginary worlds. Newin's practice is meant to exist with a grave playfulness in a mysterious, ancient future.

Make Nice is a design studio in North Carolina, working with objects, spaces, and furniture. Rather than operating with a baked-in preset, it is willing to grow and change. The universe is not a playground, but an active player; Make Nice is very willing to play with it.
