Long PlyWudd Shelving
Modern and Minimal. Inspired by a trip to Chinati in Marfa when Mike turned 30, this cabinet plays with proportion and negative space to create a lightness surrounding the heaviness of the shelving contents. Unadorned and utilitarian baltic birch plywood doesn't compete with the basic form of the furniture, allowing for an honest, clean composition. The stark minimalism is a perfect balance for the deep personal and cultural value inherent in records.
The top is 12" deep, enough for most coffee table books. The negative space between shelves can fit a few books for display as well, or be stuffed with small porcelain dolls or sticks.
About the Maker - Mike Newins
Mike Newins is a designer and maker. In the studio, he works with a lot of self-imposed restraints: starting with a very specific goal and adding restrictions until he has something beautiful, perfect.
Newins builds work that has an interactive relationship with the space and humans around it. The work is influenced by modern art, traditional craft, and imaginary worlds. Newin's practice is meant to exist with a grave playfulness in a mysterious, ancient future.
Make Nice is a design studio in North Carolina, working with objects, spaces, and furniture. Rather than operating with a baked-in preset, it is willing to grow and change. The universe is not a playground, but an active player; Make Nice is very willing to play with it.
